There’s no shortage of sales pitch ideas to consider.

When it comes down to it, the only thing that matters is that you engage with your prospects, keep the conversation alive, and position yourself to eventually close the deal.

Have you ever experimented with a funny sales pitch? Do you understand the power of using humor in the sales cycle?

Humor isn’t something you’ll use in every sales pitch but there are times when it can work in your favor.

Continue reading for more information on when and how to use this to your advantage.

Reasons to use humor in a sales pitch

Before you create your first funny sales pitch, it’s important to understand the reasons to use humor in the first place. Here are three reasons to head down this path:

1. It breaks the ice

One of the biggest challenges facing any salesperson is breaking the ice.

This is particularly true when conversing with a prospect for the first time.

With a funny (yet appropriate) sales pitch, you break the ice and make it easier to proceed with the rest of the conversation.

2. It shows your personality

If you have a fun, outgoing, and friendly personality, you want it to show through when making sales calls.

This can go a long way in connecting with prospects on a deeper level.

You want to come across as more than a salesperson. You want to show your human side. There’s no better way to do so than with humor.

3. It makes you more likable

Just because you’re likable doesn’t mean that a prospect will buy from you, but it doesn’t hurt your cause.

You’ll more effectively connect with a larger number of prospects when you show your personality through the use of humor.

While these are three of the top reasons to use humor in a sales pitch, it’s just the beginning. The more you do this, the more benefits you’ll realize.

Funny sales pitch ideas

Before we go any further, there are two things to keep in mind:

  1. No two people have the same sense of humor, so don’t think “too far outside the box.”
  2. Don’t cross the line in regards to your humor. Doing so can put off a prospect before you ever have the opportunity to pitch them. No joke is better than an off-color or bad joke.

With that out of the way, let’s examine three funny sales pitch ideas to experiment with in the near future.

1. A humorous customer story

This is best used when connecting with a prospect by phone.

Once you hook them and they’re listening to what you say, integrate a humorous customer story to break the ice and show your personality.

When possible, choose a story that the prospect can relate to.

For example, if you’re targeting mortgage leads, use a related anecdote to help strengthen your connection.

2. A short, witty joke

It may sound silly, but there’s nothing wrong with starting a conversation with a short joke.

Think about it this way.

Most prospects are used to hearing the “same old pitch.” And for that reason, they’re more likely to tune you out if you take that approach.

Here’s an example you can customize to match your situation:

“Hi, this is [first name] with [company name]. Before I tell you why I’m really calling, can I first tell you a joke?”

With this unique approach, the person is more likely to listen to your joke and give you the opportunity to make your pitch.

3. A cartoon

You can use a cartoon in several ways.

For instance, if you’re sending an email or postcard, a humorous cartoon is a good way to attract your prospect. Just the same as telling a joke, it’s a unique approach that improves the likelihood of catching the person’s attention.

In addition to the above, don’t be shy about integrating jokes and funny stories into your pitch. You can do so to break up the conversation, prove your point, or simply make the person more comfortable with you.

As you perfect your pitch, search for places to interject humor.

Doing so every now and again shows that you’re human. It shows that you’re more than just another salesperson.

Review and rehearse your pitch

In your head, it’s easy to believe that a joke or humorous story will “land.”

But until you rehearse your pitch, it’s difficult to understand exactly how it comes across.

Read through your pitch several times to ensure that it makes sense, that it’s appropriate, and that it fits the overall tone of the conversation you hope to have.

You should also practice your pitch on others before using it on a prospect.

Listen to their feedback, ask if there’s anything you should change, and take their advice to heart. They may suggest a simple change that can go a long way in improving the way you deliver a joke.

Do you have leads to pitch?

A funny sales pitch doesn’t do you any good if you’re only practicing in front of a mirror.

At some point, you want to put it into action. You want to see if your pitch helps you close more deals. And that means you need a steady flow of leads.

There are many ways to generate leads, ranging from online advertising to word of mouth. Just the same, you can purchase leads online to maintain more control over the process.

If you need more leads to pitch, you’re in the right place.
