Reasons to use humor in a sales pitch

Before you create your first funny sales pitch, it’s important to understand the reasons to use humor in the first place. Here are three reasons to head down this path:

1. It breaks the ice

One of the biggest challenges facing any salesperson is breaking the ice. 

This is particularly true when conversing with a prospect for the first time. 

With a funny (yet appropriate) sales pitch, you break the ice and make it easier to proceed with the rest of the conversation. 

2. It shows your personality

If you have a fun, outgoing, and friendly personality, you want it to show through when making sales calls. 

This can go a long way in connecting with prospects on a deeper level. 

You want to come across as more than a salesperson. You want to show your human side. There’s no better way to do so than with humor. 

3. It makes you more likable

1. A humorous customer story

This is best used when connecting with a prospect by phone. 

Once you hook them and they’re listening to what you say, integrate a humorous customer story to break the ice and show your personality.

When possible, choose a story that the prospect can relate to. 

For example, if you’re targeting mortgage leads, use a related anecdote to help strengthen your connection. 

2. A short, witty joke

It may sound silly, but there’s nothing wrong with starting a conversation with a short joke. 

Think about it this way. 

Most prospects are used to hearing the “same old pitch.” And for that reason, they’re more likely to tune you out if you take that approach. 

Here’s an example you can customize to match your situation:

“Hi, this is [first name] with [company name]. Before I tell you why I’m really calling, can I first tell you a joke?”

3. A cartoon

You can use a cartoon in several ways. 

For instance, if you’re sending an email or postcard, a humorous cartoon is a good way to attract your prospect. Just the same as telling a joke, it’s a unique approach that improves the likelihood of catching the person’s attention.

Review and rehearse your pitch

In your head, it’s easy to believe that a joke or humorous story will “land.”
